This was such a beautiful weaving of Magdalene. The moment I thought of Rapunzel and the tower, “this is Magdalene coded,” and you thoroughly took us through her journey. I adored reading this. Throughly researched, going all the way back to the Neanderthal connection, so elegantly constructed. Thank you Katriena for this alchemically coded read.
Aww thank you! I felt I rushed everything at the end when I realised how much I had written haha! There was so much to discuss about Magdalene coding in the texts ! Thank you for taking your time to read through 💗
I enjoyed this study -- alchemy going back to the Neolithic in tales like the smith and the devil which would become the template for faust, etc https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.150645 Animal tales seem to run back to the to the Paleolithic; the friendly animals, animal marriage, half animal... anyway, nice subject :)
Oooh! That’s such a great point make with the animals and the anthropomorphic art, pottery etc and how we see that relationship evolve in the Folk-Lore and fairytales! And yes the devil and smith! That’s one I have to study a bit more to decode possible symbolisms
Thank you! Gonna check that link out! Much appreciated
Reminds me of the Kabeiri and with it as much the Korybantes and Idian Dactyls. They are linked to the Great Goddess Rhea and Cybele. They are also dedicated to a Wotan like figure in Proto-Indo-European myth, a goddess like Cybele which is a Sovereignty Goddess, as much as Dionysus-Zagreus which is linked to Hades. Though the Korybantes who are born from the union of Apollo and the muse Thalia are as much linked to the raising of Dionysus and Zeus. Protecting them from the Titans. These themes going back to Proto-Indo-European times. As such indeed the Neolithic. There is an attested ritual of offering swords to these deities as well. Cybele as a Great Mother figure and Dionysus-Zagreus as a deity link both to rebirth and the underworld. Thus also themes of life, death, and regeneration.
From what I remember Jung also wrote about the Kabeiri as the smiths of lucky ideas. Chthonic beings that create in the dark caverns. Which also in a Norse sense is linked to the dwarves. Though the link between dwarves and fairies is also an interesting bunch. As there is a lot of overlap, but distinction there. With the etymology as well. The Svartálfar being synonymous with the dwarfs. Meaning something like swarthy elves. Originally such beings where linked to the Goddess, as much to Greek Hephaestus, though this might be a later figure, than these dwarf like beings. This also being visible in the ancient mystery cults. Where the child of the Goddess, Cadmilus, was in a mystic sense also her consort at the same time. Same with Hades. As this was originally just the name of the realm, and the deity was Zagreus, the archaic form of Dionysus. So Persephone being both mother and consort. Before the myths taking on different forms, and what the Orphic mysteries called Dionysus-Zagreus was split. Becoming the Dionysus most people know, and Hades. The Dactyls, the Korybantes, and the Kuretes were also all associated with metallurgy. The Korybantes, and the Kuretes in the more ancient Proto-Indo-European sense being linked to what is called the Koryos warrior tradition, where metallurgy was also highly revered, next to them having a strong link to the Goddess, Yemo, their leader Trito and the thunder deity.
That’s brilliant! I love how you’re seeing all the overlays and connections that go way back and across European mythologies! I need to cast my net wider outside of Europe and the Fertile Crescent and look to the indigenous Americas and further south of Africa like the Dogon creation myths. And yea the mother and consort we see in so many goddess mythologies like Isis, and possibly Virgin Mary as there is so much debate as to the identity of the Mary’s that feature in the Bible. I understand some scholars have just tried to explain this mother/ wife relationship as the prehistoric peoples way of explaining the seasons, the goddess is both the queen, mother and wife of the king. Or that could also be alluding to how royal dynasties keep the bloodline through the female due to the mtDNA
It is linked to the seasons yes, as much as that it is allegorical of human consciousness and spiritual development as well. So there is a lot of individuation themed elements encoded in it as much as environmental (seasonal) linked symbolism. Same with the Hieros Gamos.
I am dumbfounded and want to read this at least three more times to distill every morsel of this goodness and drink it up!!! Thank you for weaving this extremely unique thought tapestry of historical and soulful exploration. I applaud this type of research and writing wholeheartedly and anticipate what comes next!
Aww thank you! Likewise you’ve given me so much fertilizer with your dragon post! There are so many layers to peel back that I’ve saved that one to come back to and read through a few more times. I love this exchange I am finding on substack! So many women in particular seem to be pulling at the threads to reach to the source of the knots
Omg this was so beautiful! The depth of research and intuitive knowing that came through from your bones. What a joy to read and witness. Beautiful interpretations…I love how you coalesced seemingly discordant thought threads. You’re a fantastic writer and weaver of thoughts. ✨💗🌹
Oh wow! You flatter me so much as I never thought myself as good with words as I am with images. And coming from you who I adore your writing since I discovered you upon joining substack! Thank you! I just hoped it could stir up more thoughts, ideas and inklings for anyone who reads it, as I feel there are so many more questions to ask and I did rush the last bit on the witch as it already felt like such a long long essay haha
Aww thank you! Literally took me two weeks to compile the research then two days to write haha! Exhausted but there are so many threads one can pull! Symbolism feels like a never ending story! So much to learn still for me
very thoughtful.
Yay! Glad it’s stirred up some thoughts

Oh you absolutely are! It didn’t even feel long because I was so immersed.
And thank *you* for that feedback on my writing! Much appreciated 😊
WOW! This was fantastic. Super interesting. Thanks for sharing this with us. I learned many new things!

I know and we never will stop learning as long as we keep searching. I'm all for clutching at straws hahah
